Study design and method

Self-selected overnight temperature schedules Fourteen participants' programmed surface temperatures in degrees Celsius across bedtime, two sleep phases and wake-up. The group average runs 23.43, 21.71, 23.44, 28.38 degrees. 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 Bedtime Phase 1 Phase 2 Wake up Schedule phase Temperature (C)
Average

Each faint line is one participant's programmed target across bedtime, the two main-sleep phases, and wake-up. The bold line is the group average. Schedules differ due to individual preferences, but the average shows shared characteristics: the surface is preconditioned to just below room temperature at bedtime, then cooled further as the sleeper approaches the core of their sleep. Toward the morning, users warm their sleeping surface again, which can aid the transition from sleep to wake by encouraging a rise in user body temperature.
